Radagast the Brown is a fictional character in J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy novel, The Hobbit, and later elaborated upon in The Lord of the Rings.
He is one of the five Istari, or Wizards, sent to Middle-earth to aid in the fight against Sauron. Unlike Gandalf and Saruman, Radagast is less concerned with the political and strategic battles of Men and Elves.
Radagast is primarily known for his deep connection with nature, particularly animals. He resides at Rhosgobel, near the borders of Mirkwood, and is a skilled herbalist and healer. He often uses animals as messengers and spies, demonstrating a unique rapport with the creatures of Middle-earth.
While generally well-intentioned, Radagast's focus on the natural world can make him appear somewhat eccentric and detached from the larger conflict. His most significant contribution to the story is unknowingly alerting Gandalf to the growing darkness emanating from Dol Guldur.
His role is expanded in adaptations of Tolkien's works. He is portrayed as a central player in discovering and combating the Necromancer (Sauron) in Dol Guldur.
